Common Ground Theatre Company was set up in 2007 by Pat Whymark and Julian Harries, two actors who live in Woodbridge, along with their friend Lynn Whitehead, to produce new and original shows. They have so far performed 3 productions, all with a mixed cast of youth and professional actors, along with professional production teams. The company raises its money through funding, mostly through the Heritage Lottery Fund, but also from The Suffolk Foundation, The Seckford Foundation and Suffolk Connexions. Youth actors are not charged any fees for being a part of the company so as not to exclude any potential participants. All of Common Ground’s shows are touring productions and have so far visited Ipswich, Woodbridge, Halesworth, Luton and London.
Below are the main aims of the Company:
- To create excellent new work using professional actors as performers/facilitators with youth actors between the ages of 14 and 25.
- To foster in our youth company an interest and a deeper understanding of theatre and music theatre through direct contact with working professionals.
- To provide employment opportunities for those youth members who have completed their training and wish to go into any area of the industry and to provide a platform performance in London for all our companies.
- To tour a new play with a professional company each year, including one or more ex-youth actors, designers, musicians, writers, directors and/or choreographers who have completed their training.
- To create a new body of work for the potential benefit of other companies and to provide inclusive community events.
All our shows to date have been very well received and we hope to continue this well into the future. We are also keen to take one or more of our shows to the Edinburgh Festival.
