‘Dark Tales’ enjoys success in Woodbridge, Ipswich and London

Dark Tales, the third show for Common Ground by Pat Whymark and Julian Harries, enjoyed a successful and enjoyable tour at three venues in Suffolk and London between 11th September and 4th October 2009. The story, focussing on the travels of four ill-matched individuals through a countryside littered with foreign monsters and demons, received several positive reviews for its cast, writers and plot. The youth cast saw many members of 2008’s Gallows Song return for Dark Tales, as well as several new faces. Professional actor Tom Peters was delighted to be asked back following his appearance in Gallows Song. The second pro actor was Lisa Came, who played Leonor Boaventura, appearing in her first CGTC production. The touring show, Common Ground’s second large scale venture mixing youth and professional actors, featured a return to the Sir John Mills Theatre in Ipswich, as well as appearing for the first time at the Seckford Theatre, housed in the grounds of Woodbridge School. The tour finished with a London showcase at the Bridewell Theatre, just off Fleet Street. Directors Pat Whymark and Julian Harries said afterwards that one of their key aims is to provide a show in London; this benefits both the professional actors, who can invite directors, agents, producers and casting companies; and the youth cast, for whom the chance to perform in the capital is a rare and exciting experience.

‘Fisherman’ bows out at New Wolsey Studio

Common Ground’s second show, The Fisherman and the Turtle, finished its run of touring shows at the New Wolsey Studio, Ipswich, as part of the Ip-Art Festival. The Studio was packed to its antique wooden beams as around 80 people came to see the final performance of CGTC’s second original show, written by company directors Pat Whymark and Julian Harries. Such was the popularity and reputation of show, company and writers, several people turning up to buy tickets on the door were initially disappointed to find the show completely sold out. Fortunately, due to a few returns and the moving of some equipment, all those who turned up on the night were able to get in and see the show. The youth cast of Martha Loader, Rose Lucas, Chris Yarnell, Nancy Smith and Alfie Harries along with pro actor Luke Waldock put on another fine performance for the eager audience to conclude their tour. Martha, Rose, Alfie and Chris now return to the Common Ground main company to rehearse for Dark Tales, showing in September/October.
